115: The Self-Empowered Woman: Esmeralda Santiago

Dear Followers,

If you haven't already heard about the book "Conquistadora," you soon will. Critics have hailed it as the Puerto Rican "Gone With the Wind." And while the novel is full of twists and turns, the author's life story is truly the stuff of which Self-Empowered Women are made.

Esmeralda Santiago was born the oldest of eleven children in San Juan, Puerto Rico. When she was born, her mother was only 16, her father was 28, and already had a child with another woman. When she was thirteen years old, she, her six siblings, and her mother moved to New York in part to find a better life, and in part because - in her words - "Papi had chosen to send us away rather than marry her" (1: No Paternal Safety Net). Her mother was ultimately married and divorced three times.

Santiago entered school unable to understand, speak or write English. But with the help of library alphabet books, her language skills - in one year - improved to the point where her reading was at tenth grade level by the time she enrolled in the ninth grade. The fact that pronunciation was so difficult for her is what led her to writing. When others would laugh at her inability to make the "th" sound or to use the correct vowel form, she "hunched over notebooks, writing out my frustration, shame and rage. I lived in those pages, in English and Spanish, where the written word said what I couldn't utter." What a vindication that she would go on to write award-winning novels, memoirs, anthologies and screen plays (8: Turning No Into Yes).

The move to the U.S. was difficult for the young teenager who struggled to find a balance between the two cultures. When, after seven years, she returned to Puerto Rico for a visit, she was told that she was "no longer Puerto Rican because my Spanish was rusty, my gaze too direct, my personality too assertive..." (5: Life is Not a Popularity Contest).

Two years after arriving in New York, Santiago was accepted into the prestigious Performing Arts High School. After graduation she worked full time and spent eight years studying part time at community colleges until she was accepted as a transfer student - and given a full scholarship - at Harvard. She ultimately graduated Magna Cum Laude. (10: The Critic Within). Then, she earned her MFA from Sarah Lawrence College (13: More Than Meets the Eye).

In addition to her literary output, Ms.Santiago is an active volunteer for the following causes, which for obvious personal reasons, are close to her heart: public libraries, community-based programs for adolescents, shelters for battered women and their children, arts programs for young people, and organizations that support literature and the arts (7: Magnificent Obsession).

Her 2004 memoir "The Turkish Lover" covers the years from 1969 (when she was 21) until 1976 (when she graduated from Harvard). Much of the book focuses on her relationship with Ulvi Dogan, a Turkish filmmaker (15: Forget About Prince Charming). Since that time, she has married Frank Cantor, and they have created Cantomedia, a media and film production company.

As if her life doesn't seem amazing enough, two weeks before she was due to take her manuscript of Conquistadora to her publisher, Santiago suffered a severe stroke. The result was that she had to spend 18 months relearning how to read and write English; it took even longer to regain Spanish, which had been her first language (12: Hard Times).

I was humbled and deeply impressed by what this remarkable woman has achieved, and I hope you feel the same way.

Looking forward to your comments...

DISCOWHISTLE CLUB BANGER AMAZINGNESS - Will Young's big, giant, amazing comeback track gets a big, giant, amazing remix

They always say "it's what happens beneath the surface" that matters...
A couple weeks ago we told you all about how Will Young got amazing again and is ACTUALLY BACK THIS TIME.  Well all that is still true but the whole thing is in fact a bit better than we originally stated because not only is Will Young amazing again and ACTUALLY BACK, but he is back with a dancy (read: amazing) song that has been REMIXED IN SPECTACULAR FASHION.

'Jealousy' was already certified pop genius, but with a bass-bump and a donk on it, it becomes something WHOLLY TRANSCENDENT.

Some highlights:
1.  The beginning
2.  The thing that happens between 1:28 and 1:30
3.  The NEARLY FULL MINUTE of buildup that starts quietly at 2:40 and ends, shirt off and arms up,  in a giant bomb of molten discoglitter at 3:30
4.  EVERYTHING ELSE

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what a very good song sounds like when it buys a fancy outfit, straps on some f*ck-me heels, drops a double-stacked ecstacy and GOES TO TOWN.

MINIMAL MAKEUP: THE ONLY 5 STEPS YOU NEED

Hey everyone,
So recently i have been really into cooking sweet cakes, biscuits and slices and today i was just popping into my local supermarket to pick up some almond meal for the macaroons i was making. Personally, i never cook with makeup on so when i needed to go out to the supermarket while cooking i was stuck between doing my makeup or not worrying when i realised that i didnt have to do my whole face and i could just apply some minimal makeup. This post is about the basic makeup you can wear when you want to put a little bit of makeup on but don't want to go overboard or even look like your wearing makeup. I thought i did this post before but when i looked back on my history i realised i didnt ever post it but only ever kept it as a draft because i felt i couldn't say enough. Now, through experiencing more times where i have needed to use the minimal makeup effect i have much more to share with everyone in these simple steps to perfecting a natural look.

1. Concealer: use this to prep your eyes and cover any trouble areas you have on your skin.

2. Eyeshadow: choose a natural tone eyeshadow and a white eyeshadow. Apply the natural tone of eyeshadow (eg. MAC, Naked Lunch) lightly over your lids and with the white or very bright eyeshadow (eg. MAC, Vanilla) to your inner tear ducts and brow bone.

3. Mascara: i adore big thick black lashes also but remember girls we are going for the natural look which means either a clear or brown coat of mascara. If you did not want to wear any mascara but it would be just an extra thing to take off, you can simply curl your lashes.
4. POWDER: either a natural loose powder applied with a kabuki brush or a light coverage powder like an MSF natural by MAC will give you nice natural looking skin and will work well with the concealer.
5. LIPS: for the lips perhaps a tinted moisturiser (eg. MAC, TLC), clear gloss or lipbalm would be a subtle shine or hint of colour as well as keeping your lips nice and moisturised.

After completing only 5 steps, you are left with a beautiful and natural simple makeup look. Easy, uncomplicated, requires only the basic pieces of makeup and achieves an amazing result.

NATURAL MAKEUP

Hey everyone,

Below is a picture that reminded me of the true purpose of makeup. Makeup is supposed to enhance your natural beauty, using the bare essentials.

All you need is;
*Concealer
* Powder
* A few coats of mascara
* A smuge of eyeliner
* A natural lid colour
& a clear gloss.
=perfect natural look that you would get away with for school.

Of course you might like to switcngs up on the weekends, a party, work etc.

Just make sure that you don't use makeup to look like the woman above! I know she looks amazing with all of the professional eyeshadow techniques used and so many vibrant colours. However, can you imagine wearing this to walk down to the shops or to take a class?

HOW TO: MAKE YOUR OWN SCRUB (HONEY AND SUGAR)

Hi everyone,

AIM: To create a low cost beauty item from home. It is so unbelievably true that you save so much extra money making yummy beauty treats for your body yourself using household items rather than investing in an expensive cosmetic scrub. I personally believe that although it is justifiable to spend so much money on makeup, there can be little cost to other skincare treatments you can make yourself for your body. So today i am going to be teaching you how to make your own honey and sugar scrub with as little as 3 products; honey, sugar and oil.
PURPOSE: Scrubs are beneficial for your skin due to the outermost layer of your skin accumulates dead skin cells that need to be removed and which normal bathing does not provide the exfoliation that your skin needs.
COMPARITIVE TO: The antioxidants in coffee, cocoa, chocolate or wine.

METHOD:
1. Warm a jar of honey in the microwave for a few seconds until it becomes runny but not too hot to the touch.
2. Pour about 1/4 cup of the honey (eyeball it) into a bowl.

3.  Stir 2 tablespoons of oil, this can be coconut, almond or even baby oil.
4. Now you add sugar to the oil. This sugar can be either brown or white but i think brown sugar is a little more moist compared to white sugar and you may prefer brown for the extra nourishment.
5. In the shower, wet your body then turn the shower off.
6. This is when you apply the product. Place some of the mixture in your palms and massage in a circular motion all over your body. Remember not to do this while the shower is running to be sure that none of the mixture is washed off before you get the full effect.
7. Then rinse off and you are all done :)

RESULT: An affordable body srub which with regular exfoliation will remove the dead outer layer of your skin and make your skin feel younger, smoother, softer and healthier later of skin.

USAGE: 2-3 times per week

SCRUB FACTS:
- promote increased blood circulation
- fight cellulite
- open and cleanse pores
- remove dry itch and flakiness
- good to use before tanning to promote an even tan
- nourish and moisturize you skin
- can be used as a shaving "cream"
- can be used as a one-minute manicure or pedicure

Its a Denim Affair

The no-kids-allowed movement is spreading

What's the matter with kids today and why doesn't anyone want them around? In June, Malaysia Airlines banned babies from many of their first class cabins, prompting other major airlines to consider similar policies.

Lately, complaints about screaming kids are being taken seriously, not only by airlines, but by hotels, movie theaters, restaurants, and even grocery stores.

Earlier this month, McDain's, a Pittsburgh area restaurant that banned kids under 6 became a mascot for the no-kids-zone movement.

"Brat bans could well be the next frontier in destination and leisure-product marketing," writes Robert Klara in an article on the child-free trend in AdWeek.

Traveling is one thing, but what about in kids' own hometowns? Should kids been banned from local movie theaters, like they were at a recent adults-only Harry Potter screening? In Texas, one cinema chain has even flipped the model, banning kids under six altogether, except on specified "baby days".

Even running errands with toddlers may be off limits. This summer Whole Foods stores in Missouri are offering child-free shopping hours and in Florida, a controversy brews over whether kids can be banned from a condominium's outdoor area. That's right, some people don't even want kids outdoors.

When did kids become the equivalent of second-hand smoke? Blame a wave of childless adults with money to spare. "Empty nesters continue to wield a huge swath of discretionary spending dollars, and population dips in first-world countries mean more childless couples than ever," writes AdWeek's Klara.

Catering to the child-free community may be good for business but is it good for parents? It could help narrow choices and make kid-friendly environments even kid-friendlier. And let's be honest, babies won't miss flying first class. They won't even remember it. But their moms and dads will.

Most parents with young children have self-imposed limits on spending and leisure. This new movement imposes limits set by the public. And the public isn't as child-friendly as it used to be. As businesses respond to their new breed of 'first-class' clientele, are parents in danger of becoming second-class citizens?

Watch SixD's 'Best Damn Night - This is what would happen if Glee, Black Eyed Peas and Step Up:3D had a baby

Seriously you guys I lost my contact, check your shoes.
Ok so here's the thing.  When it starts you'll be like "omgsies I'm totes ready to hate this garbizzle" but something about it will make you keep listening and shortly before the first chorus you'll be like "well at least it's not as tragilicious as that tranny Countess LuAnn mess" and, resist as you might, by the time the breakdown bit ends you'll be all "goddammit now I'm supes obsessed" and will immediately download it from some dodgy blog or something and play it every night before you go out to whatever hotspot that cute boy with the spray tan and the sick calves (you know, the one who works in accounting but is only doing that until his modeling/event-planning career takes off) told you about, but for obvious reasons you will NEVER TELL ANYONE EVER.
