Entries for 'Women for Africa' Awards is Open, Nominations end January 31st

‘Women for Africa’ was birthed from a 20 year desire and passion to see women honoured and appreciated in a celebratory way. Everywhere you go in life you see women. Focused, driven, determined, ambitious, resourceful, passionate, talented, inspiring are just some of the characteristics that are embedded in these women.

Africa has over 40 countries and a large number of women who are unique and different in their own individual ways. Women of all walks of life tend to face a lot of challenges in today’s society and we feel it is time this is recognised, hence why we are launching Women for Africa Awards to celebrate and encourage African women. The ‘Women For Africa Awards UK’ will in 2012 seek to honour and award a number of women from African countries at a prestigious venue in central London. The categories have been carefully picked so as to encompass women in their many different roles.

Submissions for nominations for the ‘Women for Africa Awards UK 2012’ event can be sent now!

PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO COST TO ENTER THESE AWARDS.All nominations will be treated in confidence and only viewed by the selection panel and category sponsors.

Eligibility
A woman is eligible to enter the ‘ Women for Africa Awards UK’ 2012 if;
• She is resident in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man and has been so for a period of 12 months before the date of application. (This does not apply to those in the ‘International Category’)
• If she was born on the continent of Africa; or if she is born into an ethnic group or had at least two parents born into an ethnic group or groups, of African origin.
• Please note all nominees must be older than 18 on December 31, 2010.

If you would like to nominate yourself or someone you know that falls into any of the listed categories. Please check that you or the person is eligible and then send the following:

•     A picture of the nominee
•     A brief profile in no more than 100 words as to why the nominee fits the chosen category.
•     A referee (someone who can verify the nominee) name and contact details.
•     Please state which African country the nominee is from.
•     Please include a contact email for the nominee.

All selected nominees will be informed once the nomination selections have taken place and will then be entered onto the site for public viewing and judging panel to make final decision to which the winners will be announced on the day of the event.

The ‘Women for Africa Awards UK’ 2012 will be held 0n 19th May 2012 at 5.00pm. The Great Hall, Kensington Town Hall, Hornton Street, London W8 7NX. The ticket prices are £15 and £25 and will be on sale from January 2012.

Apply Now for 2012 Big Brother Africa Season 7

This year’s edition (the seventh season) of the Africa’s biggest TV shows; Big Brother Africa, is coming back for Africans viewing pleasure by May 2012. The announcement has come this early to give individuals who are interested in partaking ample amount of time to get set for the incredible journey.

The Managing Director of M-Net Africa, Producers of the show, Biola Alabi, says BBA’s audience should expect something different from past editions. MNet's Big Brother Africa  pulls off another huge surprise and this year. The producers  this season are doing something different. Those applying  must DOUBLE-UP to compete and it  means that if you want to enter for this year's season, you must partner with another person to enter as a pair. You can pick your classmate as your partner, your best friend, your sister, brother, family friend, cousin, your husband/wife if possible, your neighbor if you trust him/her etc.

M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi says, “We are thrilled to be offering a huge, new, USD 300 000 prize and to include two new countries who were chosen to participate based on their ongoing
interest in the series and their growing DStv audiences. And while Ethiopia won’t have a housemate this year, we’ll look to include them and other non-housemate countries in other ways if the opportunity arises, as we do every season. We are and have always been proudly committed to making this a truly African show. And as for Mozambique, they will be included with a housemate – but that’s all we are saying at the moment. Of course, the really big news this season is that entrants must enter as pairs. In the past we’ve seen a natural and continuous cross-over between individuals and their families, their friends. So this year, we decided to include that as part of the game. It will definitely make a dramatic addition to the series so we urge people to enter and experience what will be a uniquely different Big Brother Africa”.


This year, if you want to enter Big Brother Africa you can do so if you and your partner are citizens from one of the following participating countries: Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Both partners must come from the same country, must be 21 years or older, must be fluent in English and must have a valid passport.

Interested persons can pick up the entry form from the nearest MultiChoice office in their country anytime from February 5. Or download an entry form from the website, complete and email it back to bba@endemol.co.za. All online entry forms will also be available from February 5. Whatever you choose to do, do it fast because the deadline for entries is February 27, 2012

K'naan, Tu Face, Nneka, Asa, Rocky Dawuni makes list of Africa’s 10 biggest artistes

Ghana may have missed out on the Forbes list of 40 most  influential entertainers in Africa but when CNN narrowed it down to ten of the continent’s most famous and much-loved musical exports ten, the celebrated and award-winning international Ghanaian reggae artist, Rocky Dawuni made the cut.

Rocky, widely acclaimed as Ghana’s Bob Marley, has over the years raised high the flag of Ghana in international circles and has performed to audiences across the world as well as working with music legend, Stevie Wonder. He has won several international awards from his last album, Hymns for the Rebel Soul which was released early this year. The awards include, Best African Artist at this year’s International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA). Featured artistes was dominated by Nigerian artistes such as Asa, Nneka and 2Face Idibia. Other renowned artistes who made it to the list includes; Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour, Mali’s Salif Keita and Somali-born rapper K’naan.

Nigeria's Lamido Sanusi wins Forbes Award

He beat five other candidates for the inaugural award - including Nobel Peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote. Mr Sanusi, 50, has spearheaded reforms in Nigeria's troubled banking sector since his appointment in 2009. The central bank bailed out nine banks and removed their chief executives who were accused of fraudulent practices. Several of the ousted bankers have been put on trial for alleged financial mismanagement 'Fiscal discipline' Forbes magazine's readers gave Mr Sanusi the most votes in an online poll.

He beat Mrs Sirleaf, the Liberian president who was awarded this year's Nobel Peace prize, Mr Dangote, a Nigeria business tycoon who tops Forbes' list of Africa's richest people, former Cape Verde President Pedro
Verona Pires, who won this year's $5m (£3.2m) Mo Ibrahim prize for good governance in Africa and Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan Nobel Peace laureate who died in September.

Last year, another financial publication, The Banker, named Mr Sanusi the Central Bank Governor of the Year. Mr Sanusi's critics says his reforms have led to massive job losses in the banking sector.

But when receiving the award, he said the central bank's role was not to create jobs but to create an environment for business to thrive, Nigeria's privately owned newspaper, The Daily Trust, reports.

He called on the government to show tighter fiscal discipline and to discourage imports. "You cannot be exporting crude oil and be importing refined petrol," Mr Sanusi said, according to The Daily Trust.  Nigeria is a leading oil producer but most people live in poverty.
