2011 Recap Series: Nigeria Events/Shows that rocked

In no particular order, Here is our List of Events/Shows that rocked in 2011.

Sprite Triple Slam is a yearly Coca-Cola activation that involves basketball, music and dance The event kicked off this year on July 1st, 2011 and the grand finale took place at the Prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos on August 8, 2011. The Judges for this year's event were Lanre Dabiri aka eLDee, Michael Egbebor of the DNMT dance group fame, and Bolaji Akiode, a female basketballer who has represented Nigeria at the Olympics. The winners of the Sprite Triple Slam competition emerged after three rounds of performance with each taking home 1.5 million Naira. Justin was the winner in the basketball category while Oobi from Abuja won the music category. The dance group Furious Energy emerged victorious in the dance category.

Eclectic Sasha at Music meets Runway Event
Music Meets Runway show debuted in the Fashion industry with Music and Fashion on the Runway and it featured different Exhibitors( Vonne Couture, Viva La Resistance Toju Foyeh, Republic of Foreigner, Obsidan, Tsemaye Binite, Babuhska, Virgos Lounge, Meena) and Artistes ( DavidO, Wizkid, D'Prince, K
switc, Shank, Bany W, Naeto C, Sasha, Tiwa Savage) The event took place at Eko Hotel and Suites on July 29th, 2011.The show was organized by Jennifer Olize.

Wizkid Superstar Album Launch Concert the most anticipated album of the year from the label EME Records was a star studded event and it took place at Eko Hotel and Suites on Sunday 12th June 2011. The Sensational, fast rising star WIZKID performed hot singles like ‘Tease Me’, ‘Don’t Dull and ‘Holla at your boy’ and he also released his much-awaited album “SUPERSTAR". Artistes, Celebrities and Media Personalities came together to Launch his  album. The event was hosted by Ace Comedian Basketmouth 

P Square Concert and Album Launch  the Okoyes released  their fifth album was held on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Eko Hotel and suites, Lagos. Celebrities, fans of Psquare came out  to watch the pop stars perform songs from their latest album ‘Invasion‘ and also  other tracks from their previous works.
      
Ice prince Album launch "Everybody Loves Iceprince" The long anticipated album launch went off without a hitch on 9th of October 2011 at the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Many stars came to show support and performed, notably Chocolate City label-mates, Jesse Jags, Brymo and M.I.

Mrs Folorunsho Alakija 60th Birthday Soiree and Book launch Prominent society woman and businesswoman, Mrs. Folorunso Alakija, and her better-half, Modupe, proved their class when they serenaded Nigeria's A-list celebrities with a 3-in-1 party that practically left guests almost wishing it never ended. The celebration which has 60th Birthday at Eko Hotel and Suites and she also authored a book titled, University of Marriage. She unveiled her book at Civic Centre on Wednesday July 13th, 2011.

MTN Project Fame Opening Gala - Grammy award winning singer, songwriter and actress, Brandy Norwood , popular American R&B singer, Joe and Nigerian multi-talented pop-star, D’banj were the centre of attraction at the MTN Project Fame West Africa season 4 opening gala which held Sunday, 2nd of October at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoris Island, Lagos. The presence of the trio lit up the atmosphere at the event which marks the commencement of the fourth season of Africa’s most popular reality TV show, with exhilarating performances to the delight of a cheering crowd of over 5000 music lovers.


The Oshadipe Twins Album Launch On Sunday 17th of July, 2011at Eko Hotel and suites, the long anticipated album launch of sensational Gospel and Inspirational Artistes Oshadipe Twins who have been around the scene for a long time, started off their careers as backup singers for gospel artiste, Ebenezer Obey, after which they went on their own and put out their first LP.

The 2011 Elite Model Look Nigeria came up on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at the prestigious Civic Centre,Ozumba Mbadiwe,Victoria Island,Lagos. Chinwe Ejere won the coveted crown in an event which paraded 14 contestants. The show brought by Elohor Aisien, who was former Miss Nigeria UK. The event was attended by fashion designers,models,associates and others.

Twiterave 3  - Nigeria’s first twitter party and awards event took on took place at Tribeca bar and club, Vitoria Island on Saturday, April 30, 2011  The event brings young people from the Social Network site , Twitter.

Ynaija Hashtag Party  was a night of pure fun, Music, fashion, twitter and networking hit a peak at the first ever #Hashtag Party hosted by YNaija and Chocolate City at Swe Bar, Onikan, Lagos. Celebs who attended the event - Nollywood Actress Stella Damasus, JayJay Okocha,  M.I, comedian Tee A, Ice Prince, Snatcha of the Rooftop MCs, Jesse Jags, Brymo and many more!


Smirnoff Ice Circruise party took place on November 22nd, 2011 at Landmark, Oniru , Lagos. The party was everything promised and then some. What a cool party! Perfect venue, perfect timing and adequate security.


Laff for Christ Sake is an event  packed with gospel rhythms and jokes. The show began way back in 1994 but took a break after its sixth edition in 2009. Since then, the Comedian Julius Agwu  has been working tirelessly to resurrect the show. The show held this year at Muson Centre on October 23rd, 2011.


AY Live in Abuja , Lagos and UK - Ace Comedian AY thrilled Nigerians and those outside Nigeria with hilarious jokes at his yearly Show AY LIVE. it is one of the biggest comedy show in Nigeria and outside Nigeria.

The Mobile Market Sales is an affordable retail solution to fashion needs.Their aim is to provide affordable fashion for the average Nigerian. We retail fashion items as well as hosts fairs every month that provide an avenue for small business persons/designers to showcase their work and meet clients and for customers to shop at affordable prices. This event holds every month.

NottinHill Carnival in Uk - Held each August Bank Holiday since 1966, the Notting Hill Carnival is the largest festival celebration of its kind in Europe. Every year the streets of West London come alive, with the sounds and smells of Europe's biggest street festival. Twenty miles of vibrant colourful costumes surround over 40 static sound systems, hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, over 40,000 volunteers and over 1 million Notting Hill carnival revellers.


FELA
Felabration 2011 is an annual celebration of the  late music icon fela Anikulapo kuti, Felabration have announced the commencement  dates for one of the biggest Music festival in Africa.  Felabration 2011 held in lagos on  Monday, 10th of october   till  sunday 16th oct.,2011.


Fela in Lagos Show was an event based on the Life and Times of the Legendary 'Abami Eda' Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. The show portrayed the times and days he had with the Nigeria Military Government. Sahr Ngaujah spent the last two years playing the great Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti on stage in New York and London. Last April the Broadway show was brought to Lagos in February 2011.

Lagos Carnival Creativity, glamour  took the centre stage in Lagos on Saturday April 30th, 2011  as the Lagos Carnival 2011 took place at the Tafawa Balewa Square, TBS. People from various walks of life witnessed the beautiful display and scintillating performances by various colourfully attired Fanty groups representing different areas as the 2011 Lagos Carnival climaxed. It was the same week the 2011 Heritage Week kicked off the same week with the Fela Show and Boat Regatta.


Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant  took place at the Prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday une 25, 2011. 34 contestants representing each states across the Federal Republic of Nigeria participated this year Sylvia Nduka who represented Taraba State won the 2011 MBGN pageant

MTN Power of 10 Concert Across 10 Cities - The Biggest and Largest Network in Africa celebrated their Ten Years Anniversary. #MTNPof10 took different cities in Nigeria by storm to celebrate their Ten years anniversary.

Lagos Photo Festival -  Art festival organized by the African Artist Foundation  which brings out the ingenuity of both professional and amateur photographers  in  an environment of  creative interplay. This year's event display of various photographers from Ghana, Italy, south Africa, France, Holland, Nigeria etc took place at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos. Retrospective Store Launch In Lagos - Retrospective was introduced to Nigeria in the summer of 2010 through the monthly fashion market Le Petit Marche, quickly garnering the praise of many a dedicated customer. As part of events surrounding this year’s Hennessy Artistry, Hennessy Nigeria has announced a series of VIP Night club parties starting from September 30, 2011 with Tiwa Savage, Eldee and Banky W leading a pack of Nigerian artistes to major clubs in Nigeria!

Since Hennessy Artistry announced headliners for this year’s project, it’s been all work and even more play for headliners Banky W, Eldee and Tiwa Savage. 2011 Recap Series: Accidents that happened in 2011

In this Series, We are looking at the Top 6 Accidents that happened in the Entertainment Industry this year. First is the Yoruba Comic Actor Popularly known as 'Baba Ijesha', he  had an accident on Abeokuta Express road on March 1st, 2011. He was on his way to the Abeokuta in Ogun State to honour one of his colleagues, Mr. Latin, who was holding an anniversary party in Abeokuta. He survived the accident but His PA died  and he was buried according to muslim rites

Next up is Nollywood Actress Chika Ike who survived an accident when she was returning from a movie location when her Honda CRV crashed and thankfully she did not sustain any injuries. According to the actress, who also opened  multi-million naira fashion store in Abuja this year, “I can’t explain how I escaped unhurt because everybody that came to the accident scene could not believe the occupants of the vehicle survived. Another Accident survivor is Maye hunta (Ekaete crooner) had  survived a disastrous car accident.
 The accident occurred along Oshodi Express road in  Lagos when he was going for an event. He was driving
in his car  ,Dodge caravan and  rammed into another car in front of him. He left the accident scene with minor injuries. International Music Act Sean Kingston's survived a near-fatal jet ski accident that could have been avoided if he had bothered to take a boating safety class.

Kisean Anderson better known by his stage name, Sean Kingston, the 21 year old year old Jamaican-American artist was involved in a jet skiing accident in Miami, Florida. Kingston and a female passenger was severely injured when their jet ski struck the bridge connecting Palm Island with the MacArthur Causeway.

Rapper Rick Ross dropped out of a concert in and he suffered two seizures aboard two different airplanes within hours of one he had. The rapper, on his way to perform at a gig with the University of Memphis basketball team, suffered a seizure on a Friday morning, forcing the Delta flight that he wants to make an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale. Ross reportedly suffered yet another seizure on the second flight. The rapper was reportedly rushed to an emergency room in Birmingham, Ala., and did not make it to the concert.

It was unclear what could have brought on the two seizures. If Ross suffered what's known as a grand mal seizure, which is due to abnormal neuron activity in the brain, it could have been caused by any number of factors.

Fast rising actress, Moyo Lawal on Sunday,December 4,2011 survived an auto crash when her Toyota Camry slipped into a ditch along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway while on her way from Asaba, Delta State. The frightening incident we learnt,happened at about 10.30 a.m adjacent MKO Gardens,Ikeja,Lagos.

The car skidded into a ditch but they were rescued by other motorists and good Samaritans coming behind. Those who visited the scene of the accident told me that no one would believe Moyo and the guy who drove the car would be alive. They came out unhurt.

Fallen Stars: Deaths of 2011

2011 witnessed the death of some great showbiz stars local and International, Great Icons like Steve Jobs, Tayo Aderinokun of GTB, Christy Essien, Sam Loco-Efe, CD John, Chidinma Koko Mansion, Gary Speed and others. Here is a short list of those who died in 2011.

Elizabeth Taylor
Oscar winning actress Elizabeth Taylor died on March 23, 2011 at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital. Taylor was born in London in 1932 to American parents who returned to the U.S. with World War II looming. She bounded into the spotlight at age 12 after starring in the 1944 box office sensation "National Velvet." She won acclaim as an adult with 1951's "A Place In The Sun" and went on to score best actress Oscar nominations for "Raintree County," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," and "Suddenly, Last Summer."

In 1963, she memorably starred in "Cleopatra." She later won Oscars for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and "Butterfield 8."  She was 79. Taylor, a two-time Academy Award-winning actress who became notorious
for her seven marriages and sometimes eccentric behavior, had reported health problems in recent years and appeared frail in public appearances. Six weeks ago, she was hospitalized with congestive heart failure. Though she had recently suffered a number of complications, her condition had stabilized and it was hoped that she would be able to return home. She dies on MArch 23rd, 2011 aged 79.

Heavy D  was born Dwight Errington Myers on May 24, 1967, in Mandeville, Jamaica, and grew up largely in Mount Vernon, N.Y. His mother worked as a nurse and his father as a movie equipment repairman. Heavy D, the smooth-talking and cheerful rapper who billed himself as “the overweight lover M.C.,” died in Los Angeles on Tuesday November 8th, 2011. He was  44.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Heavy D was one of hip-hop’s most popular and charismatic figures, a girthy slickster who was an eager seducer and was unafraid of the dance floor. He was the frontman of Heavy D & the Boyz, which became the first act signed to Uptown Records, the label that was integral in building the bridge between hip-hop and R&B.

Mc Loph Obiajulu Nwaozor, who is better known as MC Loph met his untimely death on September 14th 2011, while driving on the notorious Benin-Ore expressway for his traditional wedding with his sister and fiancee. The accident claimed his life and his sister. 
GTB CEO Tayo Aderinokun

Tayo Aderinokun ( 1955 – 2011) GTBank CEO died on Tuesday June 14 2011, in London after protracted illness. Aderinokun co-founded Guaranty Trust Bank Plc in 1990 and served as Deputy Managing Director for 12 years between 1990 and 2002, after which he became the Managing Director, a position he held until his passing.

Christy Essien Igbokwe also known as Lady of Songs died aged 51. She died at a private hospital in Lagos after she fell ill three days before her death.  Popularly known as Nigeria’s “Lady of Songs”, the late Mrs Essien-Igbokwe was the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria. She began her music career in 1976 as a 16-year-old and released her first album, “Freedom” the same year. She eventually released 10 albums in a career spanning 35 years.

CD John was a comedian died on March 23, 2011 after  he suffered a serious injury in an auto crash in Lagos a night before. He was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, where he died at around 7am that morning. The fast rising comic was involved in a ghastly motor accident while returning from chrome (former Tribecca), after hosting Harry Song’s album listening party in March 2011. This incident sadly claimed his life to the detriment of the entertainment industry.


Amy Winehouse was an English singer-songwriter known for her powerful deep contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz. Winehouse's 2003 debut album, Frank, was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys, including three of the "Big Four": Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. She was found dead at her home in London on July 23rd 2011.

Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American businessman and inventor widely recognized as a charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution. He was co-founder, chairman, and
 chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs was co-founder and previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. He died on October 5th, 2011 at his home in Palo Alto, California, aged 56, six weeks after resigning as CEO of Apple. A copy of his death certificate indicated respiratory arrest as the immediate cause of death, with "metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor" as the underlying cause. His occupation was listed as "entrepreneur" in the "high tech" business.


Joseph William Joe Frazier was born January 12, 1944 and he died November 7, 2011. He is also known as Smokin' Joe, was an Olympic and Undisputed World Heavyweight boxing champion, whose professional career lasted from 1965 to 1976, with a one-fight comeback in 1981.

Adefemi Olubayo

   The Super Eagles defender died in an auto crash while on his way to Nigeria from his Greek Club. The late 25 year old was reported to have made the trip in preparation for his wedding ceremony.

  Alasari

  In March 2011, popular Yoruba actor Ishola Durojaiye Ahmed was on his way to Lagos from Abeokuta when he lost his life in a road accident. The man widely regarded as Alasari was in the vehicle with three other people who luckily escaped death but sustained minor injuries.

 Ashley Nwosu

        In April 2011, veteran Nollywood actor Ashley Nwosu died at the age of 58 after a severe illness. He reportedly became unconscious just before he passed on at the Military Hospital in Yaba.

     Iya ofili ganga

        The Yoruba Actress whose real name is Modupe Tomori gave up the ghost at her residence in Oshogbo, shortly after complaining of a brief headache.

        In March 2011, the Koko mansion reality show runner up was on her way to Abuja in her new car when she died in a nasty car crash at the age of 22.
          
 Nate Dogg

        The American Hip hop artiste who possessed a distinct voice died in Long Beach California after numerous stokes and complications.

Randy Macho Man

        In May 2011, the famous wrestler whose real name is Randall Mario Poffo, lost his life after suffering a heart failure.

        Sam Loco Efe

        In August 2011, the Nollywood actor unfortunately passed away in his hotel room while on location in Owerri at the age of 69.

 Uche Okafor

        In January 2011, the body of the former super Eagles defender was found hanging at his residence in Dallas, US. It was later revealed that he was murdered prior to reports suggesting a suicide action.





 And also to all who died in Jos, Maiduguri, Borno etc, The Youth corpers who died this year while serving their country. May their souls Rest in Perfect Peace.

A Pinch...begins its Top 10 series this week, kicking off with the Top 10 denials of 2011.

10. "I didn't say it." – SA to the president on strategy, Oronto Douglas, claiming that it was another Oronto Douglas, not him, who confessed to a US embassy official that President Jonathan was part of the problem of the Niger Delta.

9. "I never threatened Mr. President." – Gov. Sylva of Bayelsa State denying "his" voice on the recorded tape which has "him" threatening to kill the president and his wife.

8. "I'm not a crook. I'm not a criminal." – Ex-convict Olabode George rejecting any association with crookery or criminality.


7. "There is no cabal." – Petroleum Minister Diezani Madueke denouncing her earlier self for believing in the existence of cabals in the subsidy industry.

6. "Single tenure was not my idea." – President Jonathan trying to sell the idea of single term by pointing accusing fingers at those who sold the idea to him.

5. "PDP is no longer a den of killers." – Atiku Abubakar proclaiming the PDP killer-free on his return there to contest and lose the 2011 elections.

4. "It is the work of my detractors." – Gov. Orji of Abia absolving all Abians of the ABSU rape incident but pinning it on his Abian detractors.

3. "I am not a fool. He is." – Former Presidents Babaginda and Obasanjo arguing over which of them was a bigger fool.

2. "I am not a lion. I am not a king. I am not a general." – President Jonathan denying all animalistic, monarchical and militaristic tendencies in him.

1. "I voted for Goodluck, I did not vote PDP." – The culprits know themselves.

2011 Recap Series: Nollywood Actors and Actresses

This is a series of what  happened with some of Nollywood Actors and Actresses in 2011. Here is just a recap of their achievements, awards, recognition, movie premieres and many more. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly... Enjoy!!

  1. Mercy Johnson - She really made news this year with her Traditional and White wedding to Prince Okojie. Her news was on every headline both Prints, Magazines and Online. She was the number one buzz maker in Nollywood this year. Right from the preparation till the end, the news about her wedding was everywhere. After the successful wedding in  Recently in the news, it was said that she got blind at a movie location. Her publicist debunked the story and said it was a rumor that she is on a movie location in Lagos and getting set for her trip to Australia in a matter of days.
  2. Rita Dominic - The Beautiful actress was the Co Host for The Headies (Hip Hop World Awards) with Ace Producer and Rapper Eldee The Don.
  3. Chinedu 'Aki'  Ikedezie - The other half of Pawpaw got engaged recently to his wife Nneoma.
  4.  Funke Akindele - who started her career in 'I Need to know' series back in the days has risen enormously by the choice of many movies and also becoming brand Ambassador for companies  like GLO, Lagos State Internal Revenue Service and she just got an endorsement deal with KLIN Detergent. After the release of OMO GHETTO Pt 2, she premiered her movie in October 2011 'The return of Jenifa' which sold over 7 million on its first week at the Cinemas.
  5. Olu Jacob and Joke Silva - These couples are the most respected couples in the Movie Industry as at today. Mrs Jacobs clocked 50 in October and her husband of 25years renewed their vows on her 50th birthday at Freedom Park, Broad street Lagos Island. Romantic couples you say.. Olu Jacobs also got a National award on Sunday November 13th,  2011 from  Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan the  conferred award of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR)
  6. Ini Edo -  Truly, she had the year rosy for her. She landed her self in a multi million naira endorsement deal with Rebecca Hair Product makers of Noble Hair, also a GLO Ambassador. She premiered her new Movie 'I'll take my Chances' in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday, September 24, 2011. She also won Best Actress in Nigeria at the 2011 ZAFAA Awards.
  7. Tonto Dike -  The Screen Goddess has many tongues wagging this year with her enormous Mermaid Tattoo on her back.
  8. Odunlade Adekola - The Yoruba Actor  was announced earlier this year as a GLO Ambassador for Africa's Biggest Tele-communication Company.
  9. Uche Jombo - The Beautiful Nollywood Actress premiered her movie ' Damage' this year a on July 31, 2011 at the Silverbird Galleria in Lagos/ And she also premiered the movie in Houston, USA and New York.
  10. Kunle Afolayan - The Yoruba Actor joined other celebrities as one of the GLO Ambassadors  earlier this year with Odunlade Adekola. Phone Swap’ is the new feature film by award winning actor/director Kunle Afolayan. Fresh off the critical and commercial success from his last offering ‘The Figurine’’, any project Kunle touches turns into gold and this clip already looks like a surefire winner. Starring sultry Nollywood diva Nse IKpe Etim, screen legend Joke Silva, Wale Ojo and Ghanian Lydia Forson.

  12. Kate Henshaw - The Nollywood Actress, Face of Onga ambassador and former GLO Ambassador clocked the Big ''40' in July 2011. She threw a lavish party (organized by Elizabeth R) and wined 'n' dined with family and close friends. Her colleagues in Nollywood were not left out. Love that she is brave enough to embrace her age publicly. Recently her Marriage of 12 years hit the rocks. Painful! But she has moved on..
  13. Jim Iyke - The Nollywood Actor Jim Iyke has come to terms with the fact that, he has a serious anger problem and such needs help. Is it refreshing  he has realized he has anger problems and he is doing something about it by taking anger management classes.
  14. Stephanie Okereke - Nollywood star LG Ambassador, Face of Kanelekon Hair Products, VVF Advocate Stephanie Okereke covered the October Edition of The Complete Fashion Magazine along side  Bez Idakula. And she also received a National Award on November 13th , 2011.
  15. Nse Ikpe Etim - Nse Ikpe-Etim has been in the entertainment industry since age 18 when she anchored a show on NTA. Her first movie role was in Venom of justice 2 after which she has acted in various movies including the Nollywood BIG hit movies, Reloaded and Guilty Pleasures, where she acted as Ramsey Nouah's wife. She is Fast becoming a face to reckon with in the movie industry. She has featured in so many movies Phone Swap, Same Page Stage Play and others. She won Best Actress at the 2011 Best of Nollywood Awards in Lagos.
