Katy Perry and Lady Gaga top Winners List for 2012 People's Choice Awards

Full winners for the 38th annual People's Choice Awards were revealed as soon as the star-studded celebration at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live ended. Katy Perry and Lady GaGa, who were absent from the event, dominated the pack in music category. The former got four kudos, while the latter received one gong, Favorite Album of the Year.

Perry, who got seven nominations including one in TV and movie, won Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Song
of the Year, and Favorite Tour Headliner in music. The singer was additionally awarded Favorite Music Video, thanks to her geeky music video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)". She was initially confirmed to make an appearance but later scrapped it.

Like Perry and GaGa, most of the music winners didn't come to the show to collect their awards on Wednesday night. The only musicians who took the stage to accept their wins were Demi Lovato and Maroon 5. The songtress was given Favorite Pop Artist prize, and the group were honored with Favorite Band.

The Barbados R&B singer Rihanna who becomes the most popular musician of the year on social media Facebook. The Bajan songstress tops not just one but two lists at once on the networking service co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg. Riri's account has more than 47,700,000 likes, is declared the fastest growing page.

Bob Marley, Avril Lavigne, David Guetta and Enrique Iglesias fill in the rest of the top 5. Lady GaGa, who collected around 45,000,000 likes, settles at No. 7 behind Usher. Ok Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night' video is awesome and we need to talk about it

KATY PERRY KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A VIDEO AND THIS IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO ALL ACCEPT.

Ok we know we've been kind of hard on Katy, but we think that if we are all honest with ourselves we know exactly why.  She's always come off kind of snotty, and had a forced "OH MY GOD YOU GUYS I'M SUPER FUN AND WILL PROBABLY GIVE YOU A HANDY-J IF YOU BUY ME SHOTS" vibe.  Plus she married that hairy scarecrow thing.

So it has been with a certain amount of dismay and dread that we have watched the whole promo campaign for 'Last Friday Night' unfold.  First there was the literally epic single cover that showed up on "the blogs."  Then there was the cute little teaser that introduced the world to KP's alter ego - the nerdy outcast with thousands of dollars of corrective dental gear named Katy Beth Terry.  We knew the day would come when the video would come out in full, and that on that day our WORLD AS WE KNEW IT MAY BE CHANGED FOREVER.

And today, dear readers, is that day.

For there are a lot of amazing things in this song, and more importantly there are a lot of amazing things happening in this video.  In fact, a rather large proportion of all the things in the video clip are actually amazing.  95%, to be exact.

There is the wheelchair kid from Glee who somehow learned how to walk for this clip, there is Hanson, there is DEBBIE GIBSON, there is Kenny G, and in a SURPRISE TWIST there is Katy Perry being an actually tolerable person.

We have sort of a love/hate relationship with Katy Perry.  In fact, you might say that our feelings toward her are Hot and Cold (Ed Note: this is terrible.  DELETE.).  But not only is her new song 'Last Friday Night' kind of great, she's begun teasing what promises to be a genuinely amusing clip for the new single.  This is VERY DISCONCERTING for us, as we were quite comfortable in our haughty disdain for the sugary starlet.

While she never took herself seriously in the way Gaga has of late ("EVERYTHING I SAY IS VERY IMPORTANT "), KP always gave off the impression that she took not taking herself seriously very seriously ("NOTHING I SAY IS IMPORTANT AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW I THINK THAT") which is maybe even more annoying.  Because, as any kid on a family vacation to a water park can tell you, forced fun is infinitely worse than no fun at all.

But here we have Katy "bringing the LOLz" and such, and that throws a giant glittery monkeywrench in our Well-Oiled Machine of Largely Unwarranted Hate.  And we will never forgive her for making us like her.

Katy Perry took a break from terrorizing India with her wedding to film a video for new (and not completely terrible) single 'Firework,' the third taken from her 'Teenage Dream' album.   Shot in sunny Budapest, there is some nice camera work and Katy herself looks remarkably good, but the "plot" is super self-congratulatory and QUITE A BIT RIDICULOUS. 

A lot of LIFE AFFIRMING boxes get ticked in this baby... hot gay boys making out because KATY SAYS IT'S OK, an overweight girl making peace with herself because KATY SAYS IT'S OK, dancing amongst dangerous explosives in an architectural landmark because KATY SAYS IT'S OK and a girl dying of cancer but everything is fine because KATY SAYS IT'S OK.   

Thank you, Katy.  Thank you for the hope.

Let's all take a look at how the Katy Perry album did, shall we? (Hint: NOT VERY WELL)

We here at ScopiSat have mixed feelings about Miss Perry and the ridiculous things she says/wears/does/has sex with, and apparently the record-buying public does as well. 

Just a week ago, "industry insiders" and the like were championing Katy Perry's new LP 'Teenage Dream' as one of the sure-fire can't-misses of the year.  Accordingly, her label EMI shipped a million physical copies to retailers all over the country, in the standard practice of shipping twice the product you expect to sell the first week out.  Analysts had predicted anywhere between 400,000 and 700,000 sales, so the million unit shipment would be about right on.

Well, we're guessing some of those analysts will be serving you your double tall mocha capp with no whip at Starbucks next week, because Miss Perry's first week album sales came in at....wait for it... 192,000.  Now, keep in mind this includes about 35,000 digital downloads of the long-play, meaning that out of those million units sent to shops, about 160,000 were sold.  That is.... less than spectacular.

It's a shame on one hand, because the album has some great moments on it.  On the other hand it's actually a perfect outcome - an album that is half good sold half of the projection.

What are the words you think of when you think of Katy Perry?  If you're anything like us, it's words like "cheap hair dye" and "genital herpes,"  but we think we speak for everyone when we say that "effective" and "balladeer"  are not among them.  That all may change with new single 'Teenage Dream,' which manages to shoehorn the K.P. trademark sound into a ballad form in a way 'Waking Up In Vegas' attempted but failed miserably at.  After the all-conquering 'California Gurls' and now this, it seems Miss Perry might actually be here to stay.  While that prospect terrifies us, we can at least take some comfort that with every single she releases, Valtrex stock doubles in value.

Ah, always classy, this one... True to form, Katy's got all sorts of debauchery and nonsense up in her new video.  There are COLORS and BOOBS and COLORFUL BOOBS and Jell-o for some reason.

It's actually quite fun, and matches the unapologetically pop sound of the track perfectly.  It's also one of the few songs we don't mind having a completely pointless rap on.  Somehow the whole thing just....works.

The new Katy Perry sounds like a Ke$ha B-Side :( - listen to the premiere of 'California Gurls' now!

We love 'Hot and Cold.'  We really do.  We even liked 'I Kissed a Girl' for a few days back in '08.  And even if 'Waking Up In Vegas' was the aural equivalent of a root canal performed in a back alley, at least Katy Perry's "Katy Perry-ness" came out in it.  Unfortunately that's not something we can say about her new track 'California Gurls' (yes, with a "u" instead of an "i" because she is "hip" and "sTrEeT," and also because that's how she spelled it one day and since she's famous no one wanted to correct her). 

'Gurls' (shudder) does update Perry's sound a bit, adding in the rave-y 90's synths that are becoming all the rage, but at the same time somehow loses any sense of identity in the process.  In fact, if we heard this and didn't have any background or source identification, we'd guess it was a Ke$ha track. 

Still, there are worse things we could be listening to.  There could be a new Black Eyed Peas album, for instance.  Or something from Nickelback.  So we'll take this mediocre slice of crowd-pleasing paint-by-the-numbers pop, but with the hopes that Miss Perry's new album skews a little less obvious, and includes a little more of the personality that made her a star.

This is a tough one for ScopiSat.  We love Timbaland.  We also tend to hate Timbaland.  We really enjoy 'Hot n Cold' but, more often than not, can't stand Katy Perry.  You might even say we're hot and then we're..... no we're not going to say that.  Anyway this video for the TimbaPerry collaboration presents us with quite the challenge - two artists who can get it really right or REALLY wrong ('Waking Up In Vegas' anyone?) working together on a plot-heavy video.

First things first - the plot is kind of cute and works well with the song.  Other than that it's a bit of a visual mess, though, isn't it.  4 minutes of Katy Perry being 'sexy' and Timbaland touching his chin and incessantly for no reason.  Seriously.  Stop touching your chin.

Second - the music alternates between hands-in-the-air pop glory and overproduced autotune nightmare.  And sometimes...just sometimes...it's both at the same time.  Something about Katy Perry's voice just doesn't suit the track, and by the time Timbaland has finished with the production both singers might as well be Japanese sex robots for all their 'artistic contribution.'

Fully realizing that everything we've written up to this point is decidedly negative, it's only fair to tell you we pretty much can't stop listening to the track.  Why?  Because sometimes a trainwreck is just what you need.  A big cargo train full of bubblegum barreling into the side of a pop mountain.  As you watch each car derail and fly into the abyss, you know it's terrible.  You know you should be ashamed that you're enjoying watching it.  And you know it's going to make a mess.  But what a wonderful, wonderful mess it is.
