Goldfrapp's new single 'Melancholy Sky' is a gorgeous slice of electropop heaven

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME FIND MY CAR KEYS
Goldfrapp is an amazing band that everyone thinks of as an EPIC DANCE GROUP but is really an EPIC ELECTRO-CHILL GROUP.  Much of this confusion comes from the fact that nearly every chart hit the band has had has been a poppers-o-clock thumpfest, but has also not really been representative of their overall sound.  Like, at all.

Sure, they did one largely-clubby album, but other than that their output has always consisted of mostly low-key melodic e-folk.  Which is fine.  We don't judge.  ("hahaha, that's a joke" etc.)

Anyway, their slower, more pensive tracks are arguably their best ('Black Cherry' and 'A&E,' anyone?), but we have to admit that every so often we still long for the stomping, faux-flapper discobitch that gave us 'Ooh La La' and 'Strict Machine.'

Every time we get our hopes up,though,  they let us down - albeit in literally the BEST WAY POSSIBLE.  Everything inside us calls out to them to give us a donkfest club stomper, but instead we are given gorgeous, glittering, pitch-perfect downbeat pop that puts most every other group to shame.  And their new single is no exception.  It's ethereal, melodic, and a wholly immersive experience that pretty much no other band is doing and certainly no other could pull off, which might be exactly why the group insist on giving us these tracks instead of going along with the current dance music trend.

Long story short, 'Melancholy Sky' may not be the banger we were hoping for, but if disappointment sounds this good, we'll take it.

Goldfrapp are 'Alive' in new video - watch the premiere now!

Goldfrapp have had a tough time of it lately, as their BIG COMEBACK SINGLE was neither big nor much of a comeback.  Hopefully its lack of success will be just a footnote in the tome of Goldfrapp history, and new track 'Alive' will do what it says on the tin and bring the band back to life.  In all fairness, 'Alive' would have made a much better lead single, as it better showcases the unique 80's flair that the band have taken up.  The Me Decade has been mined by pop acts for the last couple years now, but most have stuck to the obvious synths and guitar stabs that defined the decade on the surface.  'Alive' takes that skin-deep pastiche and does one better, as it mimics the vocal production, harmonies and mastering that ruled the 1980's.

The video.....well it's best we just let you watch it yourselves.  It's suitably 80's, of course, with LASERS and SPANDEX but also a pentagram and Satan for some reason.

Listen to the NEW GOLDFRAPP ALBUM now!

We've still got two weeks to go before Goldfrapp's 'Head First' hits retail, but you, dear viewers, can preview the whole thing right here, right now.  And by 'whole thing' we really mean little snippets of each song oddly edited and chucked on a widget.  Still it's quite good and we recommend taking a quick listen.

Out in only TWO WEEKS and we are VERY EXCITED

Goldfrapp has a 'Rocket' in new video - watch now!

Apparently purple neon is all the rage in music videos this season...first Estelle rocked out a violet hue, and now Goldfrapp have splattered some all over their new clip.  As for the plot of 'Rocket' there is a WOMAN and a MAN and a ROCKET that looks a bit like a wang.

While 'Rocket' isn't their strongest song, or video for that matter, it's great to see Goldfrapp return to a more upbeat  sound.  Don't get us wrong - 'A&E' was brilliant, but the duo are at their best when the balls are to the wall.

New Goldfrapp - listen to 'Rocket' now!

So the new Goldfrapp is making all sorts of waves, as apparently they are keeping on in the tradition of each album sounding wildly different than the last but still being rather phenomenal.  'Rocket' is all synth, but not the same synth as before, and all upbeat but not the same upbeat as before.  Regardless, it is very good and even though we can't link to it because the label feels that NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO IT, you can hear a clip here.

Very nice.

New artwork for Rihanna's 'Rude Boy' single and Goldfrapp's 'Headfirst' album

Rihanna is in about the same place now as Goldfrapp was on their last album. Both did something unexpected and met with tepid sales. After the successes of their previous packages, however, it was unrealistic to expect that level of success to continue straight through. Sometimes it's a good idea for an artist or band to take a step back, have a lower profile, and then they can stage an epic comeback as the underdog. It's what Kelly Clarkson just did with the whole 'My December' thing. While Rihanna is in the midst of her rebuilding album, about to release a third single 'Rude Boy,' Goldfrapp are ready to emerge bigger and better with their next project 'Headfirst.'
The artwork for each just premiered, and they're both interesting in their own way.

Yes.  Very interesting.

No let's hope after this single Rihanna gets back in the studio for her big triumphant comeback.  Because we're still waiting for 'SOS' Mk II.
